In part 1, I discussed how candida and yeast overgrowth are underestimated by the medical community and how this can be an underlying factor for many chronic health conditions that compromise your health and wellbeing.

So now that you know about the causes of candida and yeast overgrowth as well as many of the symptoms it can produce, you must be asking how to know if you have candida and what to do about it.

Do I have candida?

Although there are some tests for candida and yeast infections such as stool tests, blood tests and live blood cell tests, the truth is that none of these tests are really reliable.

In my holistic nutrition practice in Oakville, I find that the simple most effective way to know if you have a yeast or candida problem is by your symptoms using a detailed questionnaire and score sheet.

Your scoring will determine the length of your nutritionist-tailored candida program as well as serve as a follow up tool to determine your progress.

What are common health problems linked with Candida overgrowth and yeast infections?

As the condition progresses, mycotoxins become abundant in the body producing serious chronic conditions. Also, undigested food particles can leak through the leaky gut intestinal holes and enter the blood stream. The body views them as foreign invaders and this can result in food allergies and sensitivities.

Candida overgrowth and yeast infections may play a role in almost any chronic health condition. One of the most well-known forms of yeast infections are candida vaginitis and oral thrush or candida mouth infection.

Candida and yeast overgrowth is considered to be a major contributor in many chronic health conditions such as digestive disturbances (gas and bloating), irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, Crohn’s disease, food allergies/sensitivities, headaches, migraines, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, leaky gut syndrome, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), hormonal imbalances, difficult menopause, rheumatoid arthritis, anxiety and depression, skin problems such as psoriasis, eczema and ADHD.

All these conditions can be effectively managed with a targeted holistic nutrition approach.

5 diet and life style Oakville nutritionist-proven tips for fighting candida:

1-Avoid taking antibiotics unless it is absolutely necessary-If you must take an antibiotic for some reason, you should always be sure to take a probiotic supplement during the course of the treatment.  This will help reintroduce good bacteria back into your body.

2-Reduce or eliminate sugars and refined carbohydrates-Candida and yeast feed on sugar so you want to make sure to starve the yeast so as to be able to keep it under control.

3-Eat a fibre rich Diet –Fibre will act as a prebiotic, feeding the good bacteria in your system that will help to defend you against an overgrowth of candida yeast and other pathogens and microbes.  Fibre will also help to move toxins out of your digestive system.

4-Drink plenty of water- Adequate water intake can also help to flush out unwanted pathogens and bacteria, helping to balance your body.

5-De-stress – Stress is a major factor in bacterial imbalance as it deplete your body of energy, resources and good bacteria. Taking short breaks throughout your day to do 10-20 deep breaths, starting your day with positive affirmations and playing with your children or pets are all awesome, easy ways to reduce stress in your life.
