Although candida overgrowth and yeast infections are almost an epidemic in our society, they are underestimated by the medical society. Candida infection or Candidiasis can wreak havoc with your health causing a vast variety of symptoms of variable nature and severity. It is linked to many common chronic health problems including chronic fatigue, lack of energy, brain fog, gas and bloating, headaches and much more.

Candidiasis is a medical term used to describe a condition where candida yeast overgrowth becomes a medical problem. Most women know this as the uncomfortable symptoms related to yeast infections.

The medical community recognizes candida as the cause of vaginal yeast infections and thrush in children and the only cure offered for yeast infections is anti-fungal pharmaceuticals, which do little to solve the problem.

What is unrecognized is that the yeast starts in the digestive tract and needs to be controlled in the gut or it may enter the blood stream and become systemic. Sufferers of candida and yeast infections need a specific candida diet and supplement program that helps in getting rid of the yeast overgrowth in the gut and restoring the balance of bacteria in the colon.

What is Candida?

Candida Albicans is a yeast or fungus that occurs naturally in the body. It inhabits the mouth, intestinal tract and vagina in females. Normally it lives in harmony with a variety of other microorganisms and its levels are kept under control by our friendly bacterial flora. The problem occurs when our normal bacteria are depleted allowing the yeast organism to overgrow and take over all the healthy microorganisms.

What causes Candida to grow out of control?

Here are some factors that support Candida overgrowth and lead to an imbalance. As a nutritionist I find that in most of the cases I cannot point to a single factor and an overgrowth is usually multifactorial. It is when our bodies are overburdened that it starts to show symptoms and our health suffers.

  • A nutrient poor diet that is rich in refined carbohydrates and sugars
  • Over use of antibiotics without replacing lost beneficial bacteria.
  • Medications as corticosteroids and birth control pills
  • Prolonged stress and lack of sleep that weakens the body’s immunity.
  • Debilitating disease and a compromised immune system
  • Heavy metals in the body as mercury and lead intoxication
  • Inadequate stomach acid levels and other digestive enzymes

What are the symptoms of candida overgrowth?

Candida overgrowth can present in many different symptoms that are related to different organs of the body. These symptoms differ in severity and nature from one person to another and often move back and forth between systems within the same individual.

Think about this list of symptoms here and if several of them apply to you, it is possible that you have an over growth of candida.

  • Persistent gas and bloating
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Sugar cravings
  • White coated tongue or thrush
  • Bad breath
  • Recurrent vaginal infections
  • Recurrent bladder infections
  • Rectal, vaginal or ear itching
  • Brain fog-Inability to think clearly or concentrate
  • Mood swings/ depression
  • Skin problems as acne or eczema
  • Food allergies/sensitivities
  • Sinus inflammation
  • Athlete’s foot
  • Pre-menstrual syndrome
  • Poor memory
  • Earaches
  • Low sex drive
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Sore throat
  • Chronic cough
  • Recurrent Urinary tract infections
  • Sensitivity to fragrances and/or other chemicals

As you can see candida overgrowth symptoms can affect any part of the body. This is because the yeast can transform into an aggressive fungal form that can burrow holes in the intestinal tract leading to a condition called “leaky gut syndrome”.

Candida produces over 70 different toxins known as “mycotoxins”. Candida toxins are carried through the leaky gut into the blood stream where they can proceed to any organ in the body.
