Are you feeling always tired even after having a good night’s sleep? Are you dependent on coffee, sugary sweets or exercise to keep functioning and going on with your day? Do you find yourself so tired that you can’t even get out of bed most of the time?

The above signs and symptoms point to burnout. The scientific term for this is adrenal fatigue or exhaustion or chronic fatigue. Unfortunately this is a very common condition in our western world that might be under recognized by the medical community.

Typically burn out is caused by chronic stress, poor nutrition, toxic food and environmental exposure, overworking and lack of sleep. It starts as mild exhaustion or lack of energy and can progress to complete burn out or even a breakdown. This condition is also usually complicated by other chronic health issues if not dealt with appropriately.

As an Oakville nutritionist, I see so many clients who are at different stages of burnout, chronic fatigue or adrenal fatigue. They usually complain of low energy and poor sleep and will also have other symptoms which include resistant weight loss, insomnia, increasing food sensitivities, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, anxiety and depression.

A thorough analysis of their health, diet and lifestyle, usually reveals that they have been going on with this condition for a long time. Even though their bodies are falling apart but they keep going on instead of stopping and addressing what’s going on.

Burnout, chronic fatigue or adrenal fatigue is a serious condition that people don’t seek advice for until things are really out of control. It might be only after being diagnosed with a serious disease or being unable to continue with their daily chores or work.

Fortunately, with the right nutrition and lifestyle intervention,  this condition can be reversed. Improvement in general condition and energy start within a few weeks of starting their program, however complete healing usually takes a longer time which may extend to months and even years. This depends on the severity of the condition and the client’s compliance to recommendations.

If you have been suffering from low energy and fatigue here are top 10 signs you are in burnout:

  1. Constant fatigue that is not relieved by rest or sleep.
  2. Everyday tasks seem overwhelming
  3. Having difficulty completing tasks that used to be easy
  4. Easily fatigued after minor exertion
  5. Taking a restful vacation does nothing to improve your fatigue
  6. Increase in food allergies, sensitivities and intolerances
  7. Digestive disorders
  8. Insomnia, anxiety, depression
  9. Lowered sex drive
  10. Sensitivity to extremes of temperature and poor circulation.

If you have one or more of the above symptoms it’s highly recommended that you seek help of a qualified nutritionist. The earlier you seek help, the better your chances are to heal and regain your energy.
